Your Opinion On Blacklining?

So I've been redoing my Tactical Squads and have been adding blacklining in the minor details.

I would like to show you an example but I'm just going to have to hope you know what I'm talking about.

Just wanted to ask real quick whether or not you do it yourselves and whether you think it looks good?

I'm in two minds about it really.

I'll have pictures up tomorrow but this is just quick as I have loads of painting to do and want to get as much done as I can.

Thanks

  1. I do it when something doesn't look good without it. There'll be a photo up on GAME OVER in the next few days that should show you what I mean.

  2. I use blacklining on models that are colored appropriately. I do essentially the same thing on my Blood Angels but use dark brown instead of black. It's important to pick the right color for lining.

Washing works well if you want to shade the entire surface evenly, but careful lining looks better if you want to get bold colors on the flat areas.

  3. I use it when I need a hard delineation between surfaces of similar color, like a red and a brown. A crisp black line can make it look like distinct surfaces rather than a mushy fade between the two colors. Reaper has a number of colored "liner" paints. They are very high pigment, so they are easy to use for lining in one pass.
