Re-Based - Imperial Fist Dreadnought 1

Finally I'm back after a lengthy absence due mainly to me playing video games instead of anything 40k related. The only 40k related thing I've done recently is checked up on your blogs and enjoying them. Finally got some work done hobby wise and now I thought I'd show you what I've been up to. The Dreadnought definitely hasn't got the best paintjob in the world but I have come to terms with the fact that yellow has beaten me and I shall do my best with the rest of the army. No more yellow for a long time I think, until I develop as a painter I think.

One thing I shall be adding to him soon, apart from a few touch ups here and there, is a Forge World vehicle icon to cover up some of his bad paint work haha.

I will say I really like the bases I purchased and have had fun painting them, this was a challenge though because I had to re-position his legs to make him fit, something I haven't attempted before. Let me know what you think of his position, tried to not make him look like his falling over at least.

I like the base a lot and just need to add maybe another wash and another light drybrush and it's done I think.

Let me know what you think.

Autocannon Dreadnought #2 Finished...

So much of the same really and more than likely the same criticism to be had but again pretty pleased with how they look now.

Lots of Dreadnought dakka to play with now.

Autocannon Dreadnought #1 FInished...

So my first Autocannon Dreadnought is complete using the arms from bitspudlo.com.

Before you say I do realise how bent the barrels are but I shall sort them out as soon as I can. Being that there resin that shouldn't be to hard.

Overall I really like the design and it was nice and easy to paint.

Looks pretty badass to.

Light Box Tester:Assault Terminators

So I got my new light box in the mail Friday so I thought I would take some photos of the progress I've made on my Assault Terminators as a mess around to see how they look.

Obviously I'll have to see which backgrounds are best and sort better camera shots etc etc but I think they turned out ok.

It really shows where needs neatening up to me which I like, and it also shows a little more detail etc that I couldn't get before. It was a well worth investment.

I will say that please ignore the bases, I am awaiting some resin ones coming soon.

I shall be having fun with taking more photos of some of the things I've worked on since I last posted pictures.

Thanks,

Autocannon Dreadnought WIP

So I got in these lovely Autocannons from http://bitspudlo.com/ extremely cheap and great quality. If you want them look in the section Bitsbox.eu and look at there flak cannon platform.

Basically you have these Dreadnought shaped arm attachments that are separate from the platform mechanism and you have to do some minor work to get them to fit. I will say that it will make it easier if you have a dremel, but I used a knife haha. It's all resin so easy to work with, I'm now gonna sort out some magnets to make it easier for me to keep them on. This is because it was hard to get the hole sizes right with a knife but I did an alright job haha.

So I highly recommend checking them out even just to look at there other bits.

Apologies for the poor pictures but my set up has gone missing since moving stuff around haha.

I will try and get a better set up soon as I have a few things to show.

Thread where I found them http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/341067.page

Is Lysander Over Costed?

So I was flicking through the codex once again and this subject, maybe not with the same character but this subject, has probably been bought up but none the less I wish to hear your opinions.

For this I will use a character that is used fairly often in the Marine codex Vulkan He'Stan .

This guy is just ridiculous in my opinion and I wish Lysander made as much sense to the army as this guy does.

I'm by no means complaining about him as I think he's a good character that makes sense to his army.

The problem I have is that in comparison Lysander makes little sense.

You pretty much all know what Vulkan does but for the purpose of this I shall list what he brings, by himself he has a 2+ save and a 3+ Invuln save, a gauntlet mounted heavy flamer and a master crafted relic blade. Pretty impressive. Then there is more he also makes all Thunder Hammers Master Crafted and makes all flamers, heavy flamers, meltas and multi meltas twin linked. I think this makes him a no brainer really for alot of  Marine players and I do understand that. He comes in at a 190 points which I think is pretty fair maybe a little cheap.

Now we get to Lysander, he is a rather odd ball character I feel. I think this is partly due to him still having bolter drill which he had as a Sergeant upgrade back in 3rd Edition (I still have the codex).  He comes in with a 2+ save and a 3+ Invuln, a master crafted Thunder Hammer with hits being resolved at strength 10 and add +1 to vehicle damage charts, he is also Eternal Warrior.  Which in my mind means use him to get up close and beat face, not as easy of a choice as that, his special rules are bolster defenses ( makes sense, it's fluffy ), Stubborn which makes sense and Bolter Drill this is where it doesn't make much sense. I think they need to re-think a little on this and try to figure out a more fitting replacement for Bolter Drill or drop his cost and remove it.

He's 200 points which is in my opinion a little ridiculous for what little he does. The problem I think is that it makes sense to put him with a Sternguard Squad for the re-rolls but then he's super beat stick is wasted so your other option is Assault Termintors but it doesn't seem like he is needed really as they have enough power behind them and your paying the equivalent of another squad for him. The other option I think is with shooty Terminators for the re-rolls with a gating Librarian which seems pretty cool but still expensive.

I'd really like to here your opinion. With 6th Edition apparently coming next year this is the one thing I hope they change haha. I don't care about anything except for them to give me a character that makes more sense or is cheaper.

EDIT: Once again something from the comments has prompted me to add to this post. I have also been reminded that a regular captain outfitted in Terminator Armour with a Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield is only 30 points cheaper than Lysander. That is just ridiculous. I think that makes me eat my words a little in saying he maybe over costed when in comparison that is just silly.

Thanks.

The Evolution Of An Army List

I'd like to start by saying I've been pretty sick recently so I haven't done much in the way of anything constructive past week or so which explains my lack of posts. Though I'm pleased to announce I am fit as a fiddle once more and got back to painting today after tying up what it was I intended to build for my list.

So expect more pictures of my work soon as I'll make the effort to crack some stuff out before I go away to Games Day and Warhammer World possibly. Both of which I shall be taking alot of pictures of for you to enjoy.

To the subject of this post.

Before I felt ill I built a fair few army lists and had alot of help from people in the community for which I am grateful. I then proceeded to tweak these lists till I was happy. Then I bought them up on forums and further tweaking ensued.

Then I bought it up again and more tweaking.

Now I'm finally done haha. Apart from very minor things I shall maybe change I have the core of my 1500 point list that I was aiming for.

What I found interesting is how involved I got in just building the list. It fascinated me how frustrated I got with myself over something minor like a wrong points cost haha. I think I may have taken it a little to seriously.

In the end I came out with something that isn't super competitive and does hold true to the Imperial Fist way while being at least slightly competitive as would happen when you visit forums haha.

I got it down to two lists in the end the first one being my main choice and the second being another idea.

Both of which I'm fairly happy with

List 1

Libby - 140 Terminator Armour Storm Shield

7 Sternguard - 235
2 Combi Melta
2 Combi Flamers
Drop Pod

Rifleman Dreadnought - 125
Rifleman Dreadnought - 125

Tactical Squad – 230
Power Fist
Flamer
Missile Launcher
Rhino

Tactical Squad – 240
Power Fist
Meltagun
Lascannon
Rhino

Combat Squad - 165
Razorback Las/Plas or Las or Assault Cannon

Vindi - 120 w/dozer blade

Vindi - 120 w/dozer blade

List 2

Librarian Cestus - 100 points
Space Marine Librarian with Null Zone and The Avenger.

ELITE
Ancient Torian - 125 points
Dreadnought with two twin-linked autocannons.

Ancient Rokan - 125 points
Dreadnought with two twin-linked autcannons

5 man Sternguard Power Fist 3 x Combi-Melta 2 x Combi Flamer in a Razorback w/Heavy Bolter - 215

TROOPS
Squad Vendetta - 240 points
10 Space Marines with Flamer, Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Power Fist Combi-Flamer , mounted in Rhino

Squad Vengeance - 245 points
10 Space Marines with Melta, Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Power Fist Combi-Melta, mounted in Rhino

FAST ATTACK
Deathwind Squadron - 210 points
3 Land Speeders with multi-melta and heavy flamer.

Deployed Seperately

HEAVY SUPPORT
Annihalatum - 120 points
Vindicator with dozer blade.

Crucible - 120 points
Vindicator with dozer blade.

*EDIT*

List 3

Libby - 100

5 Sternguard - 185
2 Combi Melta
2 Combi Flamers
Rhino

Rifleman Dreadnought - 125
Rifleman Dreadnought - 125

Tactical Squad – 230
Power Fist
Flamer
Missile Launcher
Rhino

Tactical Squad – 235
Power Fist
Meltagun
Multi Melta
Rhino

Combat Squad - 165
Razorback Las/Plas or Las or Assault Cannon

Vindi - 120 w/dozer

Vindi - 120 w/dozer

Thunderfire Cannon - 100

As said I like both but I think the first one tipped the balance for me purely because I can easily make that out of most of what I have on me already. The one thing I may change in List 1 is drop the dozer blades from the Vindis to give a second las to the tacticals and for List 2 I'd swap the Razorback with one of the Tactical Squads.

I guess what always limits me is my lack of funds and not wanting to sell everything I already have and starting over haha.

I'm just interested what you go through when you make a list? This question is to the newbies and the veterans as I'd like to know how you go about it.

Thanks!

Just One Drop Pod???

So I thought about my list and what I could do to make it have some more Imperial Fist elements to it. I figured I really do need to take Lysander. He is a fun character regardless of points and such. So then I thought what to put him with? Well as I was going to build them anyway Sternguard seemed a good option. Now how are they getting around? Well this is the interesting thing. I thought that maybe a Drop Pod of 9 Sternguard and Lysander gives the squad survivability because Lysanders in it, gives them assault capabilities because Lysanders in it, makes there bolters that little more scary because....I'll stop there.

The only thing is when I was building the rest of it I thought that considering what models I have currently I could build a list with just one that may be effective.

So I gave it a go.

Lysander - 200

9 Sternguard w/ 2 x Combi Melta 2 x Combi Flamer w/Drop Pod - 285

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, melta and missile launcher Rhino - 235

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, flamer and missile launcher Rhino - 230

10 Scouts - missile launcher,  sniper rifles, 150

2 x 1 Land Speeder - multi-melta, heavy flamer 150

Vindicator x2 w/siege shields- 250

To me sounds like a fun list that suits what I feel is an Imperial Fist army roster.

Vindicators can put holes in the enemy but you can't just take one you have to take two.

The one thing I could change is reducing the Scout Squad and sticking camo cloaks on them and getting another regular speeder to fill out there squad a little.

I also have not and refuse to put this past forums as it always usually comes back to 'well that's not competitive' -_-

But that's a completely different matter!

Please give me your feedback as always.

Edit: I also found an Imperial Fist sample GW list that I played around with and came up with this.

HQ
Librarian Cestus - 100 points
Space Marine Librarian with The Gate of Infinity and The Avenger.

ELITE
Ancient Torian - 125 points
Dreadnought with two twin-linked autocannons.

Ancient Rokan - 125 points
Dreadnought with two twin-linked autcannons

TROOPS
Combat Squad Vendetta - 270 points
10 Space Marines with Flamer, Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Power Fist, mounted in Razorback with twin-linked lascannons.

Combat Squad Vengeance - 275 points
10 Space Marines with Melta, Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Power Fist, mounted in Razorback with twin-linked lascannons.

Combat Squad Viagra - 155
5 Space Marines Sergeant with Power Fist mounted in a Razorback with twin linked heavy bolters

FAST ATTACK
Deathwind Squadron - 210 points
3 Land Speeders with multi-melta and heavy flamer.

HEAVY SUPPORT
Annihalatum - 120 points
Vindicator with dozer blade.

Crucible - 120 points
Vindicator with dozer blade.

10 points if you see one rather entertaining change I made.

Thanks!

Librarian, Chaplain Or Lysander...

Right well after having asking alot around the web about my list building I have come up with a fair few along the way.

The main decisions are mainly based around the three characters I mentioned.

Also another big factor is whether I should take the Land Raider but we shall get to that.

So here is a bunch of 1500 point lists for you to give advice over.

First up a Chaplain list.

HQ
Terminator Chaplain - 130

Elites
Assault Terminaters - w/ Land Raider w/multi melta- 460

Dreadnought w/Twin linked autocannon - 125

Troops
10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, melta and missile launcher
Combat squad for Las Razorback - 275

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, flamer and missile launcher
Combat squad for Las Razorback - 270

Heavy Support
2 x pred w/autocannon las- 240

Next we have a Librarian list

HQ

Terminator Librarian with Storm Shield - 140 GOI and Null Zone

Elites
Assault Terminaters - w/ Land Raider - 450

Dreadnought w/2 x Twin linked Autocannons - 125

Troops
10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, melta and missile launcher
Combat squad for Las Razorback - 275

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, flamer and missile launcher
Combat squad for Las Razorback - 270

Heavy Support
2 x Predator w/autocannon las- 240

And finally the Lysander list

HQ
Lysander-200

Elites
Assault Terminaters - w/ Land Raider - 450

Dreadnought w/Twin linked Las - 135

Troops
Tactical Squad w/Power Fist, Melta, Multi Melta w/ Rhino - 235

Tactical Squad w/Power Fist, Flamer, Missile Launcher w/ Rhino - 230

2 x Predator w/autocannon las- 240

Now the thing I find about these lists is that you have this massive target, the Land Raider at such a small point game. I've played a hand full of games and the one game I saw someone use a Land Raider it got shot at alot.
This could be a good thing or a bad thing. Depending on what they are packing of course. But with all the anti tank out there I cant see it working. Unless you think differently?

I do however like the Librarian and the Chaplain lists for different reasons. With the Chaplain list I get a Land Raider with some re-rolling thunder hammers and a multi melta on top of that. With the Librarian list I get GOI in case my transport goes bye bye and I get psychic defence.

Priority Target?

Then we get to the Lysander list. It lacks alot of firepower. Nice idea but I don't think it'd work.

I also have the question of which flavour Land Raider to take? If I take the standard one I get a couple extra Lascannon shots, if I take the Redeemer I get some good anti-infantry and if I take the Crusader I can squeeze in a Lascannon for one of the Combat Squaded Tactical Squads.

I have also built lists which don't include the Land Raiders and instead capitalise on more bodies and firepower. But if you think one of these are viable I'd be happy to build them. I did want to use Vindicators but I think they must just get shot up quicker than the Land Raider and figure Predator's fit Imperial Fists fluff just aswell.

If you don't like the lists I'll just go with the other ones and decide from there and not bother you with this anymore haha.

This is the list that would be my alternative

Pedro - 175

5 man Sternguard 2 x combi melta 2 x combi flamer 1x power fist- w/rhino - 180

Dread w/twin linked las - 135

Dread w/2 x tl autocannon - 125

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, flamer and missile launcher Razorback - 270

10 man Tactical Squad w/power fist, melta and missile launcher squad Razorback - 275

Scout Squad w/missile launcher w/camo cloaks - 100

2 x pred - 240

I was thinking that maybe I could replace the scouts for two cheap melta attack bikes especially considering with pedro making the sternguard scoring.

(I doubt I'll get any replies with the new Space Marine game out haha)

Thanks!

Help With Basing...

Right so I have decided against doing the mud thing for Imperial Fists and instead want to do and urban/rubble/cities of death kinda thing.

On a quick search I found these which show what I'm kinda looking for.

I just wanted some advice or links or something to help me achieve this kind of look? I know the colours I need just not the materials etc.

So if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated!

Thanks For The List Help....

I just wanted to say a massive tanks to Fourth Company Librarium who helped me out by posting a couple of 1500 point lists for me.

It was a great help and I really appreciate it. I took his second list that he gave me and messed around with it a little.

This was the original list

Lysander- 200

5 Assault Terminators w/ thunder hammers and storm shields- 200

Land Raider Redeemer w/ multi-melta- 250

Tactical squad w/ meltagun, lascannon, combi-melta, power fist, and Razorback w/ twin-linked lascannons- 295

Tactical squad w/ power fist, combi-melta, and Razorback w/ twin-linked lascannons- 200

Predators w/ autocannon turrets and lascannon sponsons- 120

Predators w/ autocannon turrets and lascannon sponsons- 120

Vindicator- 115

I really do like this list as it does capture the weapon heavy feel of the Imperial Fists.

The only thing that worried me was the lack of troops, which he himself said may be a problem, so I messed around a little and came up with this.

HQ

Lysander- 200

Elites

5 Assault Terminators w/ thunder hammers and storm shields- 200

Dreadnought w/ twin linked las - 135

Troops

Tactical squad w/ power fist, combi-melta, melta, multi-melta w/ Rhino - 235

Tactical squad w/ power fist, melta and missile launcher w/ Rhino 235

Heavy Support

Land Raider Crusader - 250

Predator w/autocannon and las sponson - 120

Vindicator - 115

I'd be interested in what he thinks of this as well as you guys. The reason I changed the Land Raider is I wanted more infantry killyness and why I changed the troops I'd like to have at least 2 full squads for scoring.

General tactic is the same as Fourth Company Librarium put it, hang back as there is lots of firepower and wait for the enemy to come to me, once they advance counter-punch with the Terminators and Vindicator. This part is straight from the post, against very shooty armies use all your shooting to cover the advance of the Land Raider. The Terminators should tear through most shooty armies.

This sounds like a very fun list to me.

I'd really like to hear your input.

Thanks!

I Hate Painting Yellow Continued...I've Cracked It!

Previous Post here

By jove I think he's got it!

Yes indeed ladies and gents!

And it's something I can do relatively easily.

It is literally Foundation White and the a Flat Yellow hit it with a wash then highlight with white/yellow mix.

Excellent.

I would show you an example but I currently can't haha.

But hopefully I shall be able to tomorrow.

I can't explain how happy I am this worked after spending the whole day trying loads of different combinations.

Mostly resulting in a to dark of a yellow or an extremely streaky yellow or to thick.

This being only around 3 layers plus wash is less time consuming than all of the other things I've tried and also looks the way I want.

This won't be for most people because I seem to find most people like a more muted yellow.

I was ready to concede hand painting yellow as it was seeming hopeless and was quite ready to go buy some spray but this worked so saves me a walk and doesn't hurt my pocket.

I realise that it doesn't look extremely professional or anything but what I have found is that alot of the people I've seen on websites/forums with really nice Imperial Fists I find out airbrushed/sprayed them.

This being the colour that I want them which is a kind of lemon yellow.

If I can find my old airbrush I might have to break it out eventually and try it but until then I have found this method which works to a reasonable standard.

Also this is where I got the idea http://www.theminichopshop.com/how_to/how_to_yellow/how_to_yellow.htm

*Edit* Also on an unrelated let me know how you like the new set up.

Thanks!

Rebooting my Imperial Fists: Tacticals WIP

So I have been working on my tactical squads kind of in a assembly line kinda way but I have deviated from that a little which is what this post is about as I want your opinion on what I've been playing around with.

One thing that is really holding me back is my lack of basing materials.

Really need to get some.

Anyway here is what I I'm talking about.

You probably are thinking that they look super untidy and you are not wrong as they are by no means finished but I deviated because I wanted to test a couple of things.

Battle damage and a muddy looking base and feet.

Also you may notice the line work is super untidy I will be cleaning that up very soon I use these pictures as guidelines as my lighting where I paint is terrible haha.

This is an example of no basing materials!

Because I completely stripped this guy I also lost his base work and it left a lovely pool of yellow but hopefully  base materials will be on hand shortly!

Along with some weathering powders.

So let me know what you think about what I'm playing around with.

I'm just experimenting with what could make them look a little more warn and battle damaged.

And the reason there not getting done quicker is because I'm doing 20 at one time haha.

Thanks!

Ironclad WIP and Blog Forum?

So I've been working on my Ironclad once again.

I completely started from scratch on this.

And I must say I'm really happy with my new recipe for yellow and how it looks.

Ignore the fact that it's pretty messy at the moment and I didn't realise till I put the pictures up that there's a hair stuck to the engine haha.

So overall I'm really glad I started this again.

But that's not all I wanted to talk about.

So I have a test blog where I play around with settings and gadgets and such and I found a way to make a forum in my blog and wanted to share it with to see what you think and ideas and such.

Also whether you think it being apart of this blog would be a good idea?

Here is the link

Let me know!

Thanks!

Clean Up: Imperial Fist Dreadnought

So I read all your comments, much appreciated by the way, and I think I'm getting close to actually being finished with this thing.

I keep taking pictures zooming in and finding new things to fix and things that I thought I did fix but obviously didn't.

I've got a massive headache just thinking about it haha.

It's not all bad though as I'm working on other things in between so as to not get annoyed and break it haha.

Pretty sure it would have been easier if I'd had just stripped the paint off to be honest but I'm to determined not to now.

Anyway here's my progress.

It may not look like I've done much but I assure you I have.

I have cleaned up alot of the yellow that was showing through bits and pieces, yet there is still little its here and there.

More wash in places, for some reason the lighting is not showing it but I assure you it is there.

I just generally tidied it up a little.

I like how it looks and don't wish to change anything I just want the bits that are showing yellow to go away haha.

Also change the base a little to make it look more muddy.

Compare to this and tell me what you think!

I assure you that you won't have to see this again very soon haha.

Other WIP's in the works.

Thanks!

Idea For Sternguard and Re-basing With Weathering Pigments....

So I've been doing alot of stripping of paint jobs and in the process the base work has gone and I thought to myself maybe this give's me an indication to start over on the bases as well.

So I will be.

I've decided that I'm going to delve into the wonderful world of weather pigments.

More specifically a muddy pigment set.

I like the look of them and I think using them to muddy up my marines would look pretty damn sweet.

Let me know if you disagree or have anything to say about them.

My main inspiration for this I will say is RedsCorps who does rather awesome work on his Red Scorpions.

Also on to the subject of my Sternguard, while I was looking on Secret Weapon Miniatures, who have great weathering pigments and washes, I saw these and thought they would be an easy and effective way of splitting my Sternguard apart.

This combined with loads of purity seals and possibly these.

Will make great ways to distinguish them.

The great thing about them also is they are very cheap.

$5 for 5 of the Helmet Crests, I'd get 10 which would be 10 plus shipping would be $13 which totals in at around £8.

If I can find similar things for cheaper I will get them.

The loin cloths are around £7 for 10 plus shipping.

Great deal.

Before I buy them I will have a quick go at sculpting them but if not then I'm pretty set on getting these.

Let me know what you think guys.

Rebooting my Imperial Fists: Dreadnought

So I'd first like to start off by saying I will be carrying on with my Imperial Fists.

The pain which is yellow has not beaten me and I will prevail haha.

Also I'm going to use this as a community effort so to speak.

I know there a flaws in the model but I want you to take the time and list them out for me so I can eradicate them.

I've literally just finished painting this again and  want your feedback.

So I urge you to click the images to enlarge them and help me out with any little (or big) flaws with it.

He looks pretty good from a distance in my opinion but when you have a close look there's alot of messy paint work I would like to get rid of.

So please help me out.

Thanks!

Ironclad Dreadnought: Happy With The Yellow

So after I got really angry with the way it turned out I've now turned that frown upside down today haha.

I went back over with a few new water downed layers of yellow and it looks much better.

Added a little battle damage and now I'm happy with it again.

Now just to clean up messy bits and paint the melta and it's done.

Then it's on to the Drop Pod.

For some reason I'm not looking forward to painting that?

Anyway back to the Ironclad.

Should I be right in being happy with it at the stage?

Granted clean up is needed.

Give me your feedback!

Thanks!
