Crimson Fist Sternguard Squad #1 Progress

After a bit of a break again I got painting my Crimson Fist Sternguard. As with most of my Crimson Fists so far I still need to clean up the base mainly and clean the higlights so I have something to batch paint, which I like. So with that in mind please don't be to quick to judge.

One last thing I noticed the mass of cat fur on my photo tent which I shall clean before taking any more pictures  but it'll probably be apparent in these so sorry.

Crimson Fist Librarian in Power Armour

So I go this in the mail a couple of days ago and just got done painting him and just need to add details in the way of writing some scriptures, add some washes and clean up all the chips and give it a coat of varnish but other than that I like how he came out.

It is a metal miniature which is becoming a thing of the past for GW, if there's a couple things I'd say I don't like about metal it's how heavy it is and how easily the paint chips.

I will re-base this guy also as I feel he needs a bit more of a special base so looking out for one. If you could post a good place to get a 25mm hero base it would be greatly appreciated!

Crimson Fist Tactical Squads Progress 1

This is the first part of a few parts due to not all of them being finished and after taking the pictures I can see that these need there highlights tidied also but it gives the idea of the scheme I'm going with for them.

I gave myself a little break and on that break I've been reading and thoroughly enjoying the Rynn's World book from the Space Marine Battles book series. I'm about 3/4's of the way through and I'd say I recommend giving it a read if your interested in more detail in the Rynn's World invasion.

On to the picutres.....

Can you guess/do you know who the model on the right was? I have changed the arms so this may hurt your chances of guessing but it's a fairly old metal model. 

List your guesses in the comment section and I'll tell you if your right. 

But as I said earlier in the post you can see (sorry there a bit blurry) the highlights need a little tidying but I'm happy with the rest.

Really enjoying painting these guys and am getting through pretty well and nearly finished most of the units. The problem is mainly waiting to buy/things to come through the post for me to finish them off.

Crimson Fist Autocannon Dreadnought #1

So as I said before I'm trying my best to get these done quickly so mainly I'm batch painting everything which means things are getting finished alot slower but quicker if that makes sense....

Anyway I got this Dreadnought to an acceptable standard tonight and thought I'd show you. In need of a couple of washes and also neatening the highlights but other than that he's done and I'm working on my next one as I'm writing this. I'm also batch painting two Razorbacks and Rhinos also so expect pictures of those also. I also have a Tactical Squad pretty much done and a Sternguard Squad just missing a Power Fist so coming along nicely.

Crimson Fists Vindicator WIP

So this is the reason I've been gone so long, stripped everything started Crimson Fists. But first had to get the motivation to do so, got it and gave it a go. I've started work on a bunch of troops but dropping in an out of doing different parts of the army to avoid getting bored and I think it's going fairly well.

I'll let you be the judge of how I'm doing.

What needs to be done:

1. I need to finish the highlights
2. A couple more washes
3.The treads
4. Clean up (because as you can see it's still pretty messy)
5. Add tank icons

Re-Based - Imperial Fist Dreadnought 1

Finally I'm back after a lengthy absence due mainly to me playing video games instead of anything 40k related. The only 40k related thing I've done recently is checked up on your blogs and enjoying them. Finally got some work done hobby wise and now I thought I'd show you what I've been up to. The Dreadnought definitely hasn't got the best paintjob in the world but I have come to terms with the fact that yellow has beaten me and I shall do my best with the rest of the army. No more yellow for a long time I think, until I develop as a painter I think.

One thing I shall be adding to him soon, apart from a few touch ups here and there, is a Forge World vehicle icon to cover up some of his bad paint work haha.

I will say I really like the bases I purchased and have had fun painting them, this was a challenge though because I had to re-position his legs to make him fit, something I haven't attempted before. Let me know what you think of his position, tried to not make him look like his falling over at least.

I like the base a lot and just need to add maybe another wash and another light drybrush and it's done I think.

My Shiny New Resin Bases...

So I've been waiting awhile but I finally picked up some resin bases for my Imperial Fist army to really finish off what I have painted.

The ones I picked up are reasonably cheap I think for resin bases and are great quality in my opinion.

This is just what I had out at the time the rest are in the wash.

What I ended up buying was 30 25mm bases, 5 40mm and 3 60mm bases. This all came to around £20 which I think is really good for what I got.

My only real problem now is how do I paint them? Generally I think I'm going for the grey mixes for the  rubble/ground and dirt/rusty metals but I want to try and spice it up a little. Any suggestions? Also if you have any tutorials for rusty/dirty metal please point them out.

One last thing I have added a chatbox to the sidebar so get chattin! Maybe give me some tips for my bases on there?

Necron Warrior Test Model Part 2

Carrying on from yesterdays post

So this is my second attempt at a Warrior scheme let me know what you think. I have one more idea then if that doesn't work I'll try something else.

 
I have gone with a basalt grey base with a greyblue drybrush for highlight. I think it looks good and is easy enough for how many Warriors I want to paint.

The next scheme I will try is white/bone colour (notice how it is getting progressively brighter) staying the blue. That is unless you this works well? Looks better than the black definitely as someone said with the last model the black took away to much detail.

Let me know what you think and possibly what you think would fit well with the blue. I'm thinking that the higher in the hierarchy the Necron is I will include more blue as a scheme, what do you think?

At the moment I have three ideas:

1. Go all white/bone with the blue
2. Go with this scheme with progressively more blue added to the models through the hierarchy
3.Go with the black but make some adjustments such as more highlights or adding more blue to it

Any ideas you have please throw them my way.

Necron Warrior Test Model

So this is a quick test model  I just knocked up as a little break from painting yellow vehicles. Went with a little different to what I thought I would do but just went with something I thought would work.

Let me know what you think of it, it was a really nice break from painting bright yellow. It needs tidying up but it was just a quick mock up to see what you think and what I think. I like it but also fairly critical as everyone is so I'm no judge haha. Maybe you like the scheme but maybe something needs to be added? Maybe change something? Aslong as it is within my ability I will give it a go.

Which Necron Colour Scheme Do You Think?

Hey people, haven't been around because been super busy recently with Xmas and New Years etc.

Hope you enjoyed both by the way.

Speaking of Xmas, I got myself a few 40k bits. I'll go into what I got for my Space Marines at a later time but for now I'd like to touch on Necrons.

Got myself a box of Warriors, Immortals and a Command Barge to paint up but before I do I would like some inspiration on what to paint them straying from the usual silver and green.

I have bought this up before where I was fairly certain that I would stick with the Thokt Dynasty with the black and blue scheme. I still like this but I thought that maybe you guys might have some good ideas. I read all of your blogs and I see the creativity and I would love your assistance.

Maybe you prefer the classic boltgun metal? Maybe instead of blue you like red? Maybe I could do blue and white as sort of a ice theme?

All comments will result in a poll to determine what I go for. If I don't get anything back I know to stick with the Thokt Dynasty.

Autocannon Dreadnought #2 Finished...

So much of the same really and more than likely the same criticism to be had but again pretty pleased with how they look now.

Light Box Tester:Assault Terminators

So I got my new light box in the mail Friday so I thought I would take some photos of the progress I've made on my Assault Terminators as a mess around to see how they look.

Obviously I'll have to see which backgrounds are best and sort better camera shots etc etc but I think they turned out ok.

It really shows where needs neatening up to me which I like, and it also shows a little more detail etc that I couldn't get before. It was a well worth investment.

I will say that please ignore the bases, I am awaiting some resin ones coming soon.

I shall be having fun with taking more photos of some of the things I've worked on since I last posted pictures.

Which Necron Dynasty Colour Scheme?

Being that so many of you seem to have picked up the Codex I was just wondering how your going about painting your new army?

I know some of you will just have picked them up purely because they are fairly easy to paint with there classic boltgun metal, mithril silver and wash of devlan mud or similar to that. But seen as the new Codex offers us a bit more character to be given, that's not to say people didn't before as I have seen some great painted Necrons, I was wondering which Dynasty from the new Codex your going for? I myself am really undecided, yet have a few ideas, mainly something similar to the Thokt Dynasty but with a red/orange Gauss/Tesla/Blade colour which may result in creating my own Dynasty. Though I do like the sound of a couple of the Dynasties described in the book.

I just think that more than before have you had of a reason to stray from the standard colour scheme. This is one of the things that attracted me to them when I looked into them a few years back and saw some of the alternative colour schemes people have come up with that really made them look great.

I'm sure that alot of you will probably be going the standard way and I don't blame you, especially if paintings not your thing that's completely fair. I'm just wondering of those that are looking at creating or going with some of the alternatives as I'm really interested. If you are making up your own I'm even more interested to hear what your going with.

Anyone also that would like to assist me in picking a colour scheme please leave suggestions. I will say though I like the idea of a black/dark blue main colour or a bronze/copper main colour with any variant of colour to change up the guns/blades and also the colour of the shoulder pads,helmet strip, helmet etc for other units.

Please inspire me! =D

Help With Basing...Part 2

Right well I got a massive response on this.

And now I'm in the position where I don't know which method to choose haha.

So I'll break it down to a couple of choices.

We have the Gale Force 9, which personally I like because it's fairly cheap and would give a pretty cool effect with the Urban Rubble kit and maybe some drybrushed sand.

Next we have using cork, now this is interesting to me but I'm not sure where I can this cheap in the UK? I did a quick search online and it may be cheaper to go the Gale Force 9 route. But considering how much you get it may not.

If someone could point me in the direction on a good tutorial using cork for basing I would really appreciate it.

Then there is the idea of using broken slate with putty raising it, I like this but I'm not sure I trust my putty skills to make it look natural enough.

I would also more than likely add bits from my bits box in places as well.  

Just wanted to ask which you thinks the best method?  Judging on how good it looks and how easy it is to achieve. They would all cost relatively the same price so that doesn't matter.

So if you could answer me that I would appreciate it!

Help With Basing...

Right so I have decided against doing the mud thing for Imperial Fists and instead want to do and urban/rubble/cities of death kinda thing.

On a quick search I found these which show what I'm kinda looking for.

I just wanted some advice or links or something to help me achieve this kind of look? I know the colours I need just not the materials etc.

So if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated!

Experimenting With Weathering Powders....

So this is a super quick post but it's just to get your opinion on this weathering powder colour I just picked up.

I'm going to be basing it in this colour so keep that in mind.

More than likely without the grass.

Just a muddy looking wasteland.

I'm just not sure if it is to dark or not and whether I should opt for a lighter tone?

So this is Forge Worlds Dark Earth weathering powder and I'm not sure if having this as base colour is to to dark in comparison to the yellow I'm painting which is slightly lighter than the yellow shown above.

This mini was lucky as I was going to stripping him tonight haha.

It would be a massive help if you could give me a little advice on this one!

Also I just had a suggestion on it via facebook that maybe I could do lava streams with burnt grass.

Do you think that would go well with it?

*EDIT* After thinking long and hard about it I've decided that the mud look is maybe going out of the window.

I'm debating whether to just go with gravelly bases due to the fact they are siege specialists it seems only fitting they would be in that setting more often.

I'm just glad I haven't based them properly yet haha.

Your Opinion On Blacklining?

So I've been redoing my Tactical Squads and have been adding blacklining in the minor details.

I would like to show you an example but I'm just going to have to hope you know what I'm talking about.

Just wanted to ask real quick whether or not you do it yourselves and whether you think it looks good?

I'm in two minds about it really.

I'll have pictures up tomorrow but this is just quick as I have loads of painting to do and want to get as much done as I can.

Discussion:Do you field/play people with unpainted armies?

I have come across this subject many times with mixed response so I thought I would put to you my thoughts on the matter and would be really interested in what you thought on it.

My opinion is that painting the models comes first and playing the game is a bonus.

My Dad was into the hobby when it originated and he recalls it being just a miniatures business and the game was added later.

I feel this mentality should still be used.

I watch alot of battle reports and read alot of them on blogs and it really loses it's appeal to me if the army is unpainted. And when I say unpainted I don't mean just bare plastic/metal/resin I also mean things like models all sprayed one colour and plopped down on the table.

That is not a painted army in my opinion.

The reason for me bringing this up is because as you can tell I'm taking painting my Imperial Fists rather seriously. To the point where I'm now completely re-painting half of my army.

This is because I like the idea of simulating a battle with models that look realistic at what they are portraying.

If someone was to field a Chaos army say against my Imperial Fists and I lay out my pride and joy (and hardwork) on to the table and they put down a bunch of Chaos Black models in front of me I would feel it a waste of time.

This is just my opinion.

That is not to say I wouldn't play an army that is unpainted I just would feel a little disheartened.

I'm not a great painter myself and I know that this may be why you haven't painted them seen as you payed all that money for them. But you can learn.  You may not get to Golden Demon standard but at least you will have the pride of knowing you put alot of effort into what you are fielding.

I would really like to know you guys thoughts on this one as it's something I feel is an important subject to tackle.

New Venture: Orks! WAAAGGGHHH!

So after I looked at my Ironclad today and realised I really didn't like and figured I'd go back to the drawing board I thought to myself that I was getting a little tired of painting yellow. Which may assist in my paintjob on the Ironclad sucking so bad.

So I thought to myself what could I paint that'll give me a little break. So first of all I got some test minis done for the Executioners. I think I've finally found a pallet I like. Then I realised I have a bunch of unpainted Orks just waiting to have paint to brush on them.

So here is my attempt at painting one.

Give me your feedback on if you like it or what I can change etc.

This has started me wanting to have a small force (leading to big force) of Orks.

So expect more Green Skins.

If you notice the gun looks weird its because I was around 10 when I put this together with plastic glue, so yeah nothing I can do about that now.

Vallejo Model Color Test....

So I tried out Vallejo Model Color the other day just because it's cheaper and I've heard good things about it.


Well my initial thought for what I could use it for was to repaint my Librarian. This is because he was originally painted yellow. I liked him like that personally but after researching fluff and such I found that actually there meant to be blue and I felt rather silly. Then I thought to myself that because the Imperial Fists don't like the Ultramarines it makes sense they would want there libby blue. 


Then I just went ahead and bought Vallejo Ultramarine Blue and did this......

I really do like the paint personally, covers brilliantly and has a good finish to it.


I also bought 2 greens for my Captains Relic Blade...

.
So I might just have converted to them.
